After leading Rally Sweden almost from the start, Ole Christian and Jonas secured victory in the WRC2 category today. They were also the fastest R5 car of the weekend, nearly two minutes quicker than the winner in the WRC2pro class.
“This is just a dream come through! What an incredible feeling! I’ve been following Rally Sweden since I was a little boy, and to now be on the top step of the podium, is just incredible! We have been on the pace all weekend, and we had a proper fight until the final stage. We won 8 of the stages this weekend, and this victory feels extremely good. We have been fighting hard for it!”
After completing the opening stage on Thursday evening with the car in safe-mode and not in proper speed, they duo quickly came back on track on Friday morning and were leading the rally already after two stages. The Norwegian/ Swedish pairing managed to stay in the lead for the rest of the rally, and underlined how strong they are in the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.
“Our car have been perfect, that small thing on Thursday evening where nothing and easily fixed by the team. Even though the conditions on the stages with all the gravel and the slush, didn’t make it easy, we had a trouble-free weekend. Even on the second run through the stages. There has, of course, been moments, which is natural when you push on these conditions, but we never had any real issues or problems. It’s been incredible fun this weekend, and the feeling you have when you are pushing and everything is working, is just awesome.”
This is Ole Christian’s second WRC2 victory, his first came at Rally Poland in 2017. In 2018 he finished third at Rally Sweden. With victory here, and P3 at Monte last month, he is now leading the WRC2 driver standings. Ole Christian also walks away with 2 points in the WRC driver standings, after finishing 9thin the overall standings. Ole Christian also were the fastest R5 car overall, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of WRC2pro winner Mads Østberg, and nearly 3 minutes ahead of Kalle Rovanpera, who also competes in the WRC2pro.
